Earlier that day I came home from work to find the garage door open, the door to the house open, and the sliding glass door giving anyone from the busy street full view of our house and its contents. I walked in, saw the TV and playstation on (loud as can be), and asked if anyone was home... no answer. Walked to the rooms upstairs... one son is asleep in his room, the other gone. So, I turned off the TV, closed up the house, and started dinner. About 30 minutes later the other son comes home ...
Me. "Did you leave the house open when you left?
K. Yes, I went skating, I was only gone a few minutes. What's the big deal? Me. Really, I've been home 30 minutes. When did you leave? K. About 5 minutes ago... Me. Hmmm really? You might need to think about that answer. K. ? Me. You need to close the garage when you leave the house. (in my firmest mom voice) K. What's the big deal? Me. (I really shouldn't have to tell an 19yr old this right?) Stuff could get stolen out of the garage. There are hundreds of dollars worth of surf boards, tools and wetsuits that could just disappear K. Mom, I know all the kids in the neighborhood. No one is going to steal anything unless they are ticked off at me. Me. Just close the Garage... K. Mom, you are so paranoid, no one will steal anything.... We actually went back and forth on this for a while. I tried to explain that more is at stake than stuff. His brother was upstairs sleeping and would not have heard a thing. He needs to be the man of the house and protect what we have.... It was not getting through... My vindication came the next day when he couldn't find his wetsuit. The first thing he says at 6am is... "Someone stole my wetsuit!" HA HA HA - would serve him right if it was stolen... but he just left it at a friend's house. |
