Sitting at a track meet this weekend, waiting to see my son run his first event of the day, 100m in a 4x100 relay, I hear the announcer over the PA begging kids to check in to their race. "I'm still waiting for XXX HS and XXX HS to check in, come on kids we need you in the staging area, hurry up please..." I almost lost it.. but instead I laughed and asked the parents next to me... when did the begging start? We all giggled. It really took all of my will to stop myself from going up to that person and tell her to knock it off.
You give 1st, 2nd, 3rd call for staging an event then move on. (My son would have disowned me if I stepped in) If the athlete or coach doesn't hear, then too bad. GAWD she didn't even say what event to check in for, after a while it was just whining.
Track, to me is an exact sport, you can not get a medal/ribbon or a trophy unless you are the fastest. There is no participation medal. That's why I wanted my boys in this sport. Stay alert, set a goal, know your numbers and be where you are supposed to be.... I ran track in high school and I was pretty good, 100 300 hurdler, 800, shot put, girls captain and such. But we were not babied, we didn't get medals for each meet, only the invitationals and you had to be good to be invited. But I have to admit I was bummed that my parents saw, maybe one meet over 3 years of competing. Just recently I asked my mom; Why didn't you come to my meets? "We worked" besides, that was your thing and it wasn't what parents did back then. Hmmm, I thought of all this as I sat there trying to keep my sense of humor with an annoying announcer, and I realized I really didn't need to be here. My mom guilt made me trade my plans for a long run and coffee with my friends, to sit here at 8am and wait for a 10-11 sec run. But I sat there till 6pm with my husband, left for a few minutes to get my dad so he could (sit all day with us,.. I mean) see his grandson run... He did great, I love to watch him run and I'll always be very supportive but I think it's time for me to let it be his thing instead of reliving my high school days. (yes, that's him) |
