SOMEHOW, IT ALL WORKS OUT

But it's senior ditch day...

Last year, at this time, my oldest son was out of control. While I was at work all day he would barely go to school, I would receive daily emails from the school letting me know the latest truancy counts. My neighbors would text me that the music coming from the house was too loud and there were lots of kids at the place. I would be in a panic at work. I was especially worried about what he was exposing his younger brother to.
There was also a history of smoking pot in the house and in his car.
I had been working around the clock supporting computer software used worldwide and I was beyond tired but I was always home by 6:30 to make them dinner. It was like coming home to a frat house. Lots of kids eating all the food in the house tossing couch pillows around and not bothering to pick up the food and dishes everywhere or the stuff that eventually was stuck to the floor or in the couch. After a while they learned to leave before I got home. I was told that I was not liked and all his friends were afraid of me because I came home mad all the time.... Really? that's great! This is when I realized I am a parent and not a friend. The minute you try to be a friend you lose all respect as the authority. This chaos escalated into June where the "I'm 18 and can do whatever I want" got him locked out of the house for the summer.
Fast forward to today, (I have skipped over A LOT, stories I'll have to write about later) we are three weeks from HS graduation and "today" he is passing (in public school means a "D") all classes but one. But it has been a white knuckle rollercoaster ride that is not slowing down. This week has been hilarious, or at least I'm trying to find something funny about him ditching school. Text messages went something like this.

Me: Where are you? You missed school today
K: Surfing DoHo
Me: WTH you can't miss school
K: It was senior ditch day
Me: Really, I heard that was Friday not Wednesday... you know you're ditching on the wrong day right?

K: what ever..

Later that night, after I took his car keys and phone, he let me know he is ditching Friday too because it's the real ditch day. He doesn't see any reason to go to school if no one is there...

Well, how do you argue with that? I decided to let the school handle that one... He is currently serving his 10th Saturday school session.
